Questioning Techniques

Focus Points: Questioning to draw out discussion – Tutorial with Rosina Mladenovic

It is important to check students’ understanding throughout the tutorial. Rosina explains the need to interpret and understand the information, and asks the class a question about the material. Note how the question is very specific – this is very helpful for the students.

There are a few volunteers and Rosina invites a student to answer, using their name. As established in the clip about learning students’ names, it helps create rapport if a tutor uses students’ names.

The student responds and Rosina gives positive feedback. Acknowledging the student’s answer in a positive way (even if it’s incorrect) contributes to an environment that’s conducive to student interaction. Students will be more likely to respond to questions because they know the tutor will not embarrass or denigrate them in front of their peers.
