Structuring the tutorial

Focus Points: Bringing Theory to Life – Tutorial with Carson

Carson has a calm, assured and friendly style. She goes through the lifecycle of a group, using an overhead as a visual aid. She gives an overview of the whole model, and then goes into detail of each stage. The main feature to note is that Carson constantly links the model to students’ in-class and out of class experiences. This brings the theory to life. After going through the model, she extends beyond it by getting students to think outside it (i.e. that it’s not a linear process).

Note that there is no class participation/interaction at this stage of the tutorial. A ‘lecture style’ can be an effective and efficient way of covering material. Carson has included ample class participation/interaction in other parts of the tutorial.
