Focus Points: Questioning/whole group discussion – Tutorial with John

Here a number of techniques are employed. Students respond to questions and John builds on the responses through further questioning. A few points are worth noting. John uses humour to demonstrate stereotypes in relation to power perceptions.

While two students answer questions, engagement may be further generated if more students were actively involved in the discussion. John could have invited further discussion by calling on more students.

References to the research literature are useful in that they indicate to students the relevance of research in informing workplace practices. John uses a diagram illustrate a relationship. This is useful as some students respond best to visual cues over oral or written explanation.
