Clarifying Expectations

Expectations of tutors/tutorials

Rosina asks the students to offer their ideas of what a tutor’s role is. Occasionally a student’s expectation is not realistic. For example, here a student says that he expects the tutor “to give us the answers”.

Rosina handles this well; she reminds the students that her role is to assist the students to arrive at answers themselves. The activities in which she will engage them will be those that assist the students to become independent learners.

Once the expectations or ground rules of the tutorial have been agreed, you may wish to write them down and provide a copy to each student. This document can be revisited later in semester if necessary.
